Walking In The light

  • When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. John 8:12
  • I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. John 12:46
  • God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 1 John 5:6
  • He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. 1 John 9
  • For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. James 3:16

Jesus said He is the Light of the world. A world full of darkness but many people love darkness rather than the light as their work is evil. This is a fallen world and it is dark, full of evil works. As children of God, are we living as light of the world? We have the Spirit of God but do we let our light shine and bear good fruits?

But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. 1 John 2:9-11

Lets us not be deceived. Hating someone is evil. Envy and strife or selfish ambition is also evil. Word of God says when we hate our brother, we ARE IN DARKNESS, WALKS IN DARKNESS and ARE LOST and BLINDED. Is that how we want to live? Let us seek the Lord and repent for our evil works. Let the presence and Word of God cleanse us from unforgiveness, jealousy and envy. These evil works poison our hearts and block our blessings. It creates confusion and bear bad fruits.

I have seen hatred disguised as being pious or religious. A lady I knew loved to gossip and speaking badly about someone repeatedly. According to her, the reason why she is sharing with others is so that we can pray for that person. Was there even a prayer spoken?! That is a lie from hell! Wolf hiding under sheep skin. We should not tolerate it but gently remind such people that these actions are wrong and hope they will repent. If not, avoid bad company as it corrupts good character.

When we choose to forgive and not hate, we choose love and abide in the Light. God is the Light of the world, He is also Love. How do we tell the difference between children of God and children of devil? if we do not love, we can’t abide in Him nor shine for Him. Hating someone is abiding in death, murderer and has no eternal life. I didn’t came up with that. Check out the verses below.

  • In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. 1 John 3:10
  • He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 1 John 10
  • We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love [c]his brother abides in death15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 1 John 3:14,15

How do we love?

  1. We forgive one another. We accept one another. It was difficult for me initially as I was from a very broken background. Abandoned and forsaken, my foster mom (unbeliever) taught me to always remember what others did to me. When I became a christian, I need to forgive. My mentor asked me to do up a list of people who have hurt me and people who I am angry with. I forgave them, release them and even write a letter to them (I did not send it out). It was such a emotional exercise. I cried and cried. Little did I know that was a healing process. When I forgive, God can bring healing into the places of my heart where it was wounded.

As I continue to immerse in worship and word of God, He continues to heal and restores my life. Now it is a lot easier but offences will always come. Sometimes everyday. People will offend you, say things that hurt or embarrass you. Whether it was intentional or not, we need to guard our hearts and always choose to forgive and pray for the person. This opens a door to allow God to do a work in their lives too. Our problems doesn’t disappear on the day be accept Jesus as our Saviour. To truly forgive, we must grow in maturity as a believer. Grow in the Word, grow in our relationship with God and grow in fellowship with other believers. We MUST stay rooted and fruits will grow.

  • My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 1 John3:18
  • And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave [f]us commandment. Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. 1 John 3:23, 24

2) Love in deed and in truth. Genuine love is not just speaking loving words. Loving and kind words are extremely important in the body of Christ. Words can build or destroy. But love cannot be just limited to words but also in actions especially when an urgent need arise. I love Romans 12. I must quote the whole passage here. This what Jesus will do. Love in action!

  • Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
  • 1Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another.Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.[c] Do not be conceited.
  • 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[d] says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:
  • “If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”[e]
  • 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Would we welcome strangers to our home? How do we treat people who did evil to us? Are we willing to share what we have with others? Are we willing to be friends with people of low position or are we too busy climbing social ladder to associate with a “certain” clique? Are we living in peace with everyone? Lets be like Jesus, the Light of the world. Let’s us shine with love in a world of darkness.
