Entering in 2020 with Book of Joshua

Joshua is the central figure of the book. His original name is Hoshea, son of Nun, which means “salvation”. He was the assistant to Moses and personally mentored by him. He was often hanging around the tabernacle after Moses finished his prayer. He was one of the two spies sent to Jericho who believe they can conquer the land. Moses called him Joshua, which means “Yahweh is Salvation”. This is symbolic because Joshua is the leader of the children of Israel. He led millions of ex-salves into the promise land. He was the great conqueror who achieved amazing victories. But The Lord is the Real Conqueror. Glory to The King!

So the LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle. Exodus 33:11

I read the Book of Joshua many times. Today, I was reading it again, I felt we should enter 2020 with the mindset from the book of Joshua. The last decade is gone. Moses is dead. To be honest, Joshua has big shoes to fill. But did he copy Moses’ leadership style or try to be like him? No. HE IS JOSHUA.

God is bringing us to a new place. We have never gone this way before. So we need to trust Him. He has given us great promises! I am excited at His plans for me. He loves to surprise his children with awesome things. 🙂

We are about a week into a brand new decade. A lot has happened in the last 10 years. I tasted successes and failures at work. I broke up with a man whom I thought will marry me (found another girl one month later). Abandoned at 1 month old and raised by a foster family, my biological mother appeared before dying of cancer 2 months later. God called me to leave a popular church I was planted in for 8 years to another one (one which I previously persecuted and spoke badly of). I moved out from my parents home. I received major healing and deliverance and was set free from many bondages which I never knew was possible. God sent a godly mentor into my life to love and guide me. I trusted the wrong people. I changed my friends so many times. I found a new cell group where I can grow and develop as a christian. I was offended and learnt forgiveness. I was persecuted by my family for my faith. I went through great ups and downs, disappointments, betrayal and all that emotional roller coaster stuff. Things never turn out the way I expected.

“Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them—the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory. No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with youI will not leave you nor forsake youBe strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall [a]divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may [b]prosper wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you[c] shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good couragedo not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:2-9

From the above verses, God has promised us and instructed us on a few things. May we put it in practice in 2020 and enjoy a decade of good success.

  • Everywhere we set our foot on, He has given us
  • No man shall stand against you
  • I will be with you and not forsake you
  • Be strong and courageous
  • Do not look to left or right
  • Meditate on His words

Joshua and Caleb, two of the spies, spoke up. “If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us … Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us.”

Both Joshua and Caleb has a different spirit. They have a spirit of faith. A spirit that doesn’t shrink back when faced with challenges. A spirit that says “give me that mountain!”

  1. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you

In 2020, there will be challenges. In the midst of these challenges, do we remember what God says? He said that wherever you have set your foot on, He has given you. Where are you today? Are you working? Do you have a family? He has given you His victory at the workplace. Be faithful with little and He will give you more. Put on your best attitude. He said you will be the head and not the tail. Do you have children who no longer attends church? Pray and claim the verse that say ” As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord! Thank you Jesus that my son serves God!” In the next decade, claim that territory that belongs to you. Take it by force by the Word of God.

2) No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life

Whatever God has called to to do, no one can stop you. We must remember that He will always have our back. No matter what. Or are we distracted by what co-worker is doing or scheming behind your back? That friend who thinks you are so stupid to start your own business? Are you offended when someone step on your toe? Are we concerned when the bills don’t add up? Hey! He promised He will supply all your needs! In 2020, I pray that all of us will remember his Word. No matter what happens, no one can stop you from accomplishing what He has put in your heart. No one can stop him from taking care of you. I pray that every time you feel pressured, Word of God oozes out of your entire being.

“All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever. 1 Peter 1:24,25

3) I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you

God is with us. He always has been and will always be. Till the end of time. In the coming new year, remember that He is with us. He is the God of the mountain top and the God of the valley. He is there to be our Supporter, Comforter, Provider, Best Friend, Advocate and our God. Whatever we need, He is. If you lose someone, let Him comforts you. Be immerse in His love for you. Turn on worship songs that sings of His love. If you need someone to talk to, bring Him our for coffee. Talk to Him like friend. I often do that and He loves it. When the bills don’t add up, look up! Cry out to Him! He will direct your path and send help (He did that for me this year). He is right there for you and with you. Call upon Him.

4) Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed

God commanded us be strong and courageous. We do not shrink back and think it is not possible. Fear is not of God. It is the opposite of faith and they don’t live together in your heart. In 2020, I have decided to kick fear out of my life. I want to stop circling around this mountain. It has no part in me and I’m so sick of letting it rob me of my joy and peace. Fear of rejection, fear of being alone, fear of failure, fear of shame, fear of embarrassment, fear of death, fear of demons, fear of sickness, fear of promises never coming true. Fear is torment. Only perfect cast out fear. I will take communion everyday and I rebuke and bind this unclean spirit. Whatever it has taken from me, it has to return me 7 folds. Strength and courage is my portion for 2020.

5) Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left

Do not be distracted. Do not look at what your friends/ colleagues are accomplishing. Run your own race. This new year, I want to recommit myself to run my own race and not allow comparison to creep in. We are all in different seasons and are good in our own ways. Well… it is easy to say that but when temptation comes, it is a struggle. This year, I gave up comparison and ungodly competition. I pray that other people will be better than me. I pray they will achieve much much more than whatever I can achieve. I celebrate their successes in my heart. I prayed they will get everything I ever wanted. I kept praying and surrendering till I was set free. Hallelujah! My identity and value are not tied to my achievements. Now I am free to do what God has called me to do. I don’t have to keep myself so busy making sure others are ‘below’ me. I am free to be me and I enjoy myself much more. I am able to see the good in myself and acknowledge that I came a long way. Joyce Meyer always says “I not where I need to be, but I am not where I used to be!”.

6) Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth

Meditate of the Word of God should not be something a believer should do when we remember to do so. It should be a lifestyle. When we put on the armour of God, only the word is the defensive weapon. The devil will come for you. The battlefield is our mind. That’s why the bible tell us to gird up the loins of our mind! One thoughts leads to another and very soon the whole world seems to be collapsing. When we keep our mind on heavenly things, the enemies can’t plant thoughts of defeat or despair in us. This is also how we can renew our mind from old mindset (poverty, hopelessness, despair, anger, hatred, unforgiveness, etc).

I am particularly weak when I wake up in the morning. That was the time when I realise the enemy likes to plant thoughts in my mind. They want to ruin my day. So I also planted the sword of the spirit in this area where I am weak. So once I woke up, I will purposely prepare certain verses and I will think about it with all my strength. Submit to God, resist the devil and He will leave you.

Lastly, I want to let you know that your enemies are AFRAID of you. They are so afraid that you will know the truth. They are so afraid that your mind will be renewed and you will rise up. They tried to stop you from going to church, reading the bible, plant offences in your heart so you will meditate on the wrong things and leave the church. They are so afraid you will use the authority God has given you. They sent people to destroy your confidence and identity since you were a child. But God has a plan for you and me. He has redeemed us and our past can no longer hold us back anymore.

11 And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the Lord your God, He isGod in heaven above and on earth beneath. Joshua 2:11

Let’s armed ourselves with the truth- Word of God. Put on the Armour of God, stand firm to welcome the new decade.
